I love Dr. Boden. She has been wonderful when it comes to my care. She seems extremely knowledgeable [about] my injury and my EDS. This instills a sense of confidence in her ability to fix my knee.
Dr. Boden is one of the greatest doctors that I’ve ever had to deal with. I’ve had [many surgeons,] but not like her. She’s absolutely fantastic.
This was my first appointment with Dr. Boden. I loved her. She made me feel taken care of and secure [about] her care plan for my extensive injury.
I came to Dr. Stephanie Boden for a second opinion six months after receiving shoulder surgery from another Louisville [orthopedic] surgeon. I still had immense pain and instability and was not interested in receiving more “cortisone shots and physical therapy.” Dr. Boden acknowledged that she purposefully did not review my medical history to prevent any bias. She conducted an extensive evaluation of [my] movements and found a few “trigger” spots. Dr. Boden then opened the [images] (six total) requested by the previous surgeon, who could not find anything wrong with my shoulder other than a “clunk.”
In easy-to-understand language, Dr. Boden talked me through my MRIs and the areas of my shoulder [based on] what she saw (I never received anything but radiologist reports before). Dr. Boden advised that a radiologist may not know where to look on [the] imagery based on trigger spots. She pointed out that I still had a decent-sized tear on the posterior [side] of my labrum. Dr. Boden asked if she could inject a lidocaine-type agent into the area to temporarily confirm her suspicions. I agreed, and there was immediate relief! It was emotionally overwhelming—to know that in 45 minutes, Dr. Boden knew where to start, what to do, and that I wasn’t “crazy” for knowing something was still wrong.
Dr. Boden said she felt that surgery was the best option but that she wanted a CT scan done to ensure there was no bone loss. I felt safe and in good hands. Upon completing the tests, we reconvened. It was then that Dr. Boden did more movement tests, applied a small amount of pressure in one area [at] the front of my shoulder that hurt, and advised that through the additional imagery, she also found [that] my bicep tendon needed to be repaired or reattached. I explained that I had a narrow window of availability. Dr. Boden linked me with her team (Madaya and Natasha); they got me scheduled and took care of everything necessary for my referrals.
Within a few days of surgery, a nurse named Hannah from UofL East called and telephonically reviewed everything I needed to know and expect [for] surgery. Due to severe weather coming in, the UofL East surgical team maintained contact with me to make sure we were okay with still driving to the hospital. Everything worked out, and we conducted the surgery, which took a few hours longer than expected due to what Dr. Boden found. Dr. Boden said that my shoulder was so unstable that it came out of [the] socket on the operating table, and she had to remove most of the previous surgeon’s work due to loose or unhealed portions of the anterior labrum. Dr. Boden provided four pages of images and a six-page report of what she did. The pain subsided within the first few days post-surgery, so I only needed to take ibuprofen, and I could immediately tell how stable my shoulder was! I’m now transitioning into the rehabilitation phase. I feel grateful and blessed to have met Dr. Boden, her remarkable UofL team, and now know what “right” looks like in the future when receiving medical care.
Dr. Boden is amazing. I acquired a significant knee injury and was referred to her for treatment. She is [extremely knowledgeable about my injury], kind, takes time to listen, and [understood my unique circumstances related to a connective tissue disorder].
I received extremely professional care! She listened to everything that I said and was extremely patient!
Thirty stars, y’all. I had a comminuted tibial plateau fracture, Grade III ankle sprain, and a meniscus tear in a fall nineteen months ago. It was a real mess—[so much so] that the first hospital I was taken to decided it was beyond their scope and transferred me to Dr. Zamora’s group at U of L. I had the external fixator and ORIF [performed] at that time.
Meanwhile, I maxed out my PT sessions, paid out of pocket for additional PT, and spent 3–5 days a week in a therapy pool under PT instruction. But I still had so much pain—both in the joint and around the hardware. I also continued to experience instability, locking, and buckling. I started to wonder if I’d ever walk without pain again—and I’ve got a lot of living left to do.
A cortisone injection did nothing. My ankle wasn’t healing much either. It felt like they’d given up on me when they referred me over to the Sports Med group.
Then I met Drs. Boden in the U of L Sports Medicine group. They were open to more PT, open to trying gel injections and PRP (platelet-rich plasma), and open to surgery as well. [There was absolutely no pressure to pursue any specific option, which I truly appreciated.]
In the end, we decided to start with hardware removal surgery and see if anything else needed to be addressed. We also planned to do the PRP injection at the same time so I could benefit from the anesthesia. Once in surgery, Dr. Boden found plenty to clean up—a plica, loose cartilage, and a meniscus root that needed to be squared away.
Bottom line: two weeks after surgery, I’m already experiencing more knee stability than I had even before the fall. I’ve regained 95% of my range of motion—[with more to come as swelling continues to decrease].
Dr. Stephanie and Dr. Allison Boden make a great team, and they’ve coordinated my knee and ankle care seamlessly. Sometimes you come across a surgeon and end up managing their ego while trying to advocate for yourself. That was never the case here.
They’ve worked closely with my primary care physician and my physical therapist—even though those providers are in different care systems. I trust both of these doctors without reservation. I may still need ankle surgery in the future, and I feel genuinely confident knowing I’ll be in their capable hands.
I have multiple health issues, and too often I feel like I’m just the “body part” that a specialist is focused on. But I always felt seen as a person by Dr. Boden—and Dr. Boden. We are truly blessed to have them in Louisville.
We are so thankful to Dr. Allison Boden, whose expertise was [invaluable] when she performed my husband’s foot surgeries this past January after he experienced a very traumatic [motor vehicle collision (MVC)]. Dr. Boden was both [professional and compassionate] at the bedside—toward my husband and his family members. She always answers our questions and gives sound advice. She is a joy to work with, and U of L Health is blessed to have her on their team of amazing providers. Thank you, Dr. Boden, for fixing my husband!
Dr. Boden is [exceptionally] knowledgeable and has a great bedside manner. I feel fortunate to have had Dr. Boden as my surgeon.
